The Powder Toy is a open source 2d particle physics simulation sandbox that is maintained by Simon Robertshaw, with numerous other contributers.
It was originally created by Stanislaw K Skowronek in 2008, but he later took the server (powder.unaligned.org) down in 2010 due to personal reasons.
In 2010 the project was taken up by Simon Robertshaw who created a new server (powdertoy.co.uk) and continues to make a number of enhancements to the sandbox today.
The Powder Toy has many features, here’s some that I thought were awesome.
The elements:
The elements are the main focus of this sandbox, they interact with each other, and have different characteristics.
There are many of them, which range from salt water to noble gas.
Air Heat, and Electronics simulation
Air
(thanks to SatanicPanda for the creation)
Air moves, the powder toy takes this into account with everything you do. If you light wood on fire, the fire will create a upward air current.
Heat
Sorry, I couldn’t get a good example screenshot of this.
The powder toy also has heat simulation. (Which means that if you set off a explosion near a piece of metal, that metal might be able to boil water after)
Electronics
(thanks to seehp for the creation)
Zap. You can create complex electonics with The Powder Toy.
Options include:
P-Type Silicon: Will only transfer electricity to N-Type Silicon
Liquid Cristal: Changes color when charged
Creation browser
When you make something you like, or want to see what other people are making, you can use the creation browser.
If you created a masterpiece, you get the choice weather to save it privately, or show it to the world.
